Ever get the feeling you've wandered into a high school talent show by mistake? The average age of the audience is, well, under age, and the band are not much older. Still, Rock Junkie, while nothing out of the ordinary in the GN'R school of hard rock, seem proficient enough, particularly their guitarist, although I'm really not sure about the chaps and cardigan combo… Proficient, that is, until the bassist breaks a string and has to sit out a song while someone finds him a new instrument. If you ever wondered why bands need a bass player, wonder no more. Top heavy? We're talking Jordan…
Next up are my favourite glam rock band from York (that narrows the field somewhat) Kid Ego, now minus the Glitter Kittens and plus a new lead singer. Aesthetically, he's an improvement and he certainly has a good pair of lungs on him ('scream from me Glasgow' – he sure did), but without the cheesy dancers and the cheeky charm of our old friend Danny de Vito, the band have somehow lost their quirky burlesque appeal. The songs are still good and they still rock hard, but now there's nothing different about them: they're just another rock band.
And talking of other rock bands, what has happened to Wired Desire? And whatever it is, can I have some? Last time I saw them they were really rather boring, but tonight it's as if another band has taken over their bodies (and poured them into skintight jeans – nice). Tonight their bluesy garage rock is infused with pace and energy, as the band almost explode off the tiny Capitol stage, all fired up with rock'n'roll excess. Hopefully this isn't a one off for a band who tonight really did live up to their name. Yum!
