Okay, so it's hardly a holiday (Rosslyn Chapel is approximately half an hour's drive from where I live) but I thought I'd 'treat' you to my photos from the famous Templar Knight hang out. Is it the final resting place of the Holy Grail? Unlikely, but it doesn't stop this unique and beautiful building from being one of the most magical and haunting moving places I've ever visited.
You can read about the history of this fascinating place at the official Rosslyn Chapel website (watch out for the dodgy 'hey nonny nonny' music) or find out the facts about the Knights Templars and Scottish Freemasonry at the relatively sane Rosslyn Templars site. Or just read The Da Vinci Code and have a laugh at how little Dan Brown understands Scotland...
Rosslyn is famous for its many Green Men, the ancient pagan symbol of fertility. This fellow is suspended from the ceiling - no wonder he looks a bit cross...
This Green Man is rather more worn, poor soul.
This poor devil looks rather bemused...
Lucifer - captured and bound by God and hung upside down
I think this bearded angel is playing a squeezebox...
While his mate is playing the bagpipes!
This sweet angel is literally wearing his heart on his sleeve...
This knight is said to represent Sir William Clair, who founded Rosslyn in the early 14th century
These two feathery friends can be found just below the Green Man
Just inside the Baptistry are two modern stained glass windows - this one pays tribute to an airman killed in World War Two
This lovely window depicts St Francis, together with some furry friends...
