Poor Bruce Campbell. He may have starred in some of the best horror movies ever made (Evil Dead 1, 2 and 3, Bubba Ho-tep) but he's also starred in some of the worst. And now he's washed up and down on his luck, divorced, drunk and living in a trailer, sporting nasty Hawaiian shirts and eking out a living making back-to-back bad sequels in Bulgaria. At least that's according to My Name Is Bruce, a delightful B-movie parody that (whaddaya know) stars and is directed by… Bruce Campbell.
When geeky goth kid Jeff (Taylor Thorpe) accidentally unleashes an old Chinese curse on his hillbilly mining home town, who else will he call on the defeat the evil, red-eyed, cheapass demon but his ultimate hero, cult horror icon… Bruce Campbell? But once Campbell realises this isn't some large scale, Deliverance-scripted practical joke and he's really got to fight a monster, well, what's a hero to do? Head for the hills? You got it.
Our lovable, lantern-jawed hero sends himself up something chronic in this irrepressible, cheap-as-chips spoof that is the very thing it's lampooning: a late night picture show, straight-to-DVD fun-fest with special FX so cheesy they make Bubba Ho-tep's look like Weta on Berocca. But, littered with clever in-jokes and daft slapstick, this is honestly the most fun you can have on a Friday night and I just loved it. And if you've got an ounce of B-movie fake blood in your body, so will you.
