The year is 2017. The setting is a metal gig. Sulky introverted 18-year-old boy meets sassy extroverted 18-year-old girl and romance blossoms as they bond over music and ink. But the scene could so easily be 1992 and the setting a rock night at a student union. And the introvert/extrovert thang the other way round...
But even if Théo and Mag's cute-meet doesn't provide a heart-warming flashback to your own dim and distant, snakebite-and-black soaked student past, you're still likely to find lo-fi love story Fake Tattoos charming and watchable.
This is no torrid grand passion, mind. With their careful, light-hearted refusal to articulate the L word, the couple are more Sid and Nancy than Romeo and Juliet (minus the death bit, obvs).
Or is it all that obvs? With his deleted Facebook page and reticence to speak about his family, Théo is clearly hiding something. Will his secret tear the pair apart? In a film in which so much is implied yet so little actually said, will we even find out what it is?
Funny, down to earth and utterly believable, and featuring great turns from its young leads Anthony Therrien and Rose-Marie Perreault, Fake Tattoos is a delightful, bittersweet love story, and a nice reminder that while technology may have changed radically in the last 25 years, young hearts stay pretty much the same.
