Amy Adams as Giselle in Enchanted

Poor old Disney. Haven't had a hit in years. Lampooned by that pesky big green Scottish ogre at every turn. Face it, even the takeover of Pixar seemed like an admission that hand-drawn animation is dead in the water. You know what? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

So in Enchanted, Walt and Co. shamelessly send up the venerable Disney tradition by catapulting a cast of cartoon caricatures into a world where there are no happy endings: 21st century New York.

Grin and bear it through the deliberately sickly animated opening, grit your teeth through the somewhat tiresome introductory New York scenes and just wait for the moment when our saccharine heroine Giselle (Amy Adans) decides to clean up her new friend Robert's apartment with the help of a few friends – rats, mice, pigeons, flies and cockroaches. Laugh? You will! Unless you have a heart stonier than a gargoyle on the roof of Notre Dame, that is.

Because after all, try as they might, Disney simply can't be cynical. And much as this film may gently mock the magical simplicity of Uncle Walt's early fairy tales, it's nevertheless a charming, heart-warming and very sweet little movie that proves once and for all that a spoonful of sugar will always make the medicine go down – even in New York.

Stir in a sprinkling of catchy songs, a dash of delightful styling and a liberal dose of hammy scenery chewing courtesy of James Marsden (fast becoming a great young comic actor – think Hairspray and forget about X-Men), Timothy Spall and Susan Sarandon (proving without a doubt that you can take the girl out of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but you can't take The Rocky Horror Picture Show out of the girl) and you have the perfect recipe for a fun, frothy, festive feast. So check in your cynicism at the door, sit back and let some magic into your life.
